Visits in 2024

The Lost Gardens of Hoole

A walk led by Linda Webb, Chair of the Hoole History & Heritage Society on Tuesday, 30th April 2024 starting at 10:30am

Linda will talk about 'Glasshouses, Mania and Gardens'. She writes: ‘I have recently enjoyed researching the history of the estates of Hoole Hall and, more particularly, Hoole House, both of which were originally owned by the Hamilton family. The walk explores the landscape of both estates in Hoole. Access to archives and developing technology have been revolutionised since their gardens were the subject of initial research in the 1980s, since when they have been called "The Lost Gardens of Hoole". Research has revealed so much about both, especially about the reputation of the Georgian/Victorian garden of Hoole House and its visitors.’

Cost: £5 per head. Please register online, at a meeting, or by email to Richard Gillespie

Maximum number: 16 Duration: 2 hours maximum   Walk starts outside the United Reformed Church, Hoole Road, CH2 3NT. It ends at Alexandra Park, at the intersection of Canadian Avenue and Hoole Road.    Parking: Our advice is to find a parking space in local residential roads near to the start or the end of the walk, which are not far from each other. Please wear suitable sturdy footwear. We will be on paved areas most of the time, but on grass and uneven ground occasionally. We will be 'on the flat' mostly. Two other members of Hoole History will accompany us and will be available for questions and conversation as we progress.
